idi’s Fall Term is Starting Soon

As we prepare for the upcoming fall semester we are reminded of warm color palettes and rich textures.

COLOR TERMINOLOGY

Source: https://www.qed42.com/blog/from-hue-to-color-story-a-basic-understanding-of-colors

What are hues?

Hues: Hues describe a pure color that is found on the color wheel and has had nothing added to it to change its properties.

Tint Definition in Art

Tints: What is a tint in art? Tints are created when white is added to any hue on the color wheel. This process lightens and desaturates the hue.

Color Tone Terminology

Tones: Tones are created when grey is added to a color. The final tone depends on the amount of black and white used, and tones may be lighter or darker than the original hue.

Shade Color Definition

Shades: Shades are created when black is added to any hue found on the color wheel. This process darkens the hue and creates a more intense color.

Texture

Rich textured accessories tend to add to the warmth of a space. Items like blankets, throws, and baskets in warm colors can bring out the fall feel in a space.

Also, bring the outside in with fall foliage, floral, and gourds. They can be used separately or combined for added interest. Enjoy mixing it up a little this fall season!

A Peek Inside the CAD 1 Class

In the Associate of Arts Degree in Interior Design, students will learn how to tackle AutoCAD. Most students come to the class with no AutoCAD experience. This can be exciting, scary, and fun all at the same time.

First we look at the interface above and start working with some basic commands. After the first few classes students know how to draw walls and make openings for windows and doors.

Throughout the class students will create a notebook covering all the topics discussed in class. Each step that they learn is documented so that they can utilize their notebook in future classes and effectively produce drawings.

Students continue on to learn how to annotate their drawings. They prepare their first full size drawing with a title block, legend, and notes.

Another important part of a drawing set are the schedules. In class the students develop a door and hardware schedule, in addition to other schedules. Campus field trips are taken to explore the pieces and parts that make up a building. It is one thing to have walked through buildings with storefront systems all their lives. Now the students are able to understand how to draw and specify the parts so that a contractor could build from the students’ drawing set.

Reflected ceiling plans are another type of drawing that the students learn to develop. Ceilings are not only functional, they can also add a layer to a building that adds character to the space.

By the time students complete their CAD 1 class they are ready to create a drawing set for their next class. Students are encouraged to work with the CAD program during the semester breaks so that they have an opportunity to apply what they have learned to real world situations.

1,000-year-old Italian Castle Repurposed into a Hotel

Hotel Castello di Reschio just opened in the spring of 2021. The castle is situated at the northernmost tip of the 3,700-acre Reschio estate owned by Count Benedikt Bolza and his family. Below, on the right, is the church of San Michele.

They created custom furniture for the suites, restaurant, and spa that pay homage to the castle’s history. Many original features, like the stone fireplace in the mud room, were kept in tack.

Then they worked on creating interiors that respected the ancient building that also offered modern comforts. Countertops were fabricated from grey Bardiglio marble from Carrara.

“Benedikt has embraced an organic approach to the design, championing local craftsmanship and creating thoughtful, whimsical spaces that are filled with comfort and wit, while artfully nodding to the fascinating characters who once resided within the castle walls,” said the family. – Dan Howarth (https://www.dezeen.com/2021/07/05/hotel-castello-di-reschio-umbria-italy/)

In one of the bars beamed ceilings, custom lighting, furnishings, and antiques can be enjoyed by guests. The castle’s conversion to a hotel was no small feat. What a great opportunity to see historical restoration at it best.

Did you know that idi offers Art History?

Check out the Art History elective course that can also be used to meet some of your prereqs! Art History is a twelve week course. The course attempts to follow Janson’s History of Art (class is provided with a PDF of the book) from prehistoric times through modern times. Below you will see several tapestries from 1514-1521 CE. Tapestries were not only used for decoration they were also used to conserve heat.

The course also takes time to pair timelines such as cars, houses, lighting, and artists to help round out the eras, when possible. Take a look at the page below from the Art Deco era. From the Peugeot to the art, you will note a curvilinear movement that is indicative of the time.

Humans have gone from cave paintings to wall frescoes to oil painting to photography. Art has taken on many forms; from realism to impressionism to avant garde. All have evoked varying and different responses from viewers. In modern times, production design has become functional art in our environments via furnishings, as well as, typical types of art. Look at some of the interesting furnishings below that definitely make a statement!

Lighting was developed at the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to that flame was the light source that art was developed by when natural lighting was not available. There were no art stores, thus artists had to learn to make their own pigment and fabricate their own brushes. Today most do not consider the efforts that were needed to create a great work of art prior to our modern day stores.

Below, we take a look at the art of calligraphy, a staple in the Islamic world and a tool of the Romanesque Christian Church in the early formative years of the 8th century.

The painted Greek sculptures below depict a rather colorful ancient world. The course further explores the impact of how art affected the people of the time and influenced future generations.

New digital art, NFT, or non-fungible tokens exist only in a computer and have recently sold for nearly $70 million in bitcoins. NFT’s can contain anything digital such as; drawings, animated GIFs, songs, or items in video games.

As new inventions, such as photography, became mainstream and cost effective we saw the decline in the artistry of things like portrait paintings. Today’s digital images are so easily captured and stored that their value and importance has become less and less due to the sheer quantity that has been produced.

The modern crush at the world’s art museums, gotta have a selfie with Mona Lisa, or a Bottecelli in the Uffizi have brought new outlets to the world; like a Tuscan Regional or a number of Louvres, not just the one in Paris. With more museums and galleries popping up all around the world, art and history have become quite accessible to more and more people.
