Historic Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles Gets a New Look!
Apple Tower Theatre has just opened in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. The historic Tower Theatre has been premiering new technology since 1927. Tower Theatre was the first theatre in Los Angeles that was wired for films with sound. Tower Theatre was designed in 1927 by S. Charles Lee, a renowned motion-picture theater architect.
In the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design, students study the art of historical detail and preservation.
The entry is colorful and fanciful, allowing visitors to be prepared for the creativity that lies within.
After walking under the recreated Broadway marquee entry and into the store, visitors enter the Charles Garnier’s Paris Opera house inspired monumental lobby. The grand arched stairway with bronze handrails is flanked by marble Corinthian columns.
To date, this has been one of the most significant restoration projects that Apple has taken on. Artisans were employed to restore, repair, repaint, and repolish surfaces by hand.
Surrounded by the theater’s original balconies is the Forum which is the heart of the store. The signature video wall sits underneath the fully restored arch.
Apple collaborated with leading preservationists, restoration artists, and the City of Los Angeles to thoughtfully preserve and restore the theatre to its original beauty and grandeur.
All surfaces were carefully refinished. The building also had a full seismic upgrade.
The restored stained-glass window features a coiled celluloid film strip and the purple stripe found only on early sound film. Another detail is the unique fleur-de-lis pattern.
The theater’s original balcony seating has been modernized and made accessible, creating an open, flexible space for Genius Bar appointments.
