IDI Editorial Team3 min read

Two IDI Graduates, One Conversation

Rick Campos, IDI graduate and host of the Design Biz Survival Guide podcast, interviews Lindsay Olson, IDI graduate and owner and principal designer at Lulu Designs, based in Costa Mesa, CA.

Lindsay shares her experiences from IDI student to running a successful design company for over 25 years.

About the Episode

In “Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future,” episode 228 of the podcast, Lindsay talks about her journey from real estate to model homes, partnering with developers on spec homes and renovations, and ultimately launching her own interior design business.

She and Rick also discuss the value of formal design education, the benefits of legacy clients, and how the business of design has changed over her 25 years in the industry, and where it’s going next.

Press play to start at 16:20, where the conversation turns to Lindsay’s design education.

Meet Lindsay Olson

Lindsay founded Lulu Designs more than two decades ago. Her path to design began with a passion for real estate in her college days and led through house flipping and furniture before she launched her own firm.

Based in Orange County, Lulu Designs specializes in luxury residential interiors and home renovations, along with commercial work that includes hospitality, healthcare, and retail spaces. Lindsay’s work has been recognized by publications including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, and HGTV.

“My design ethos is rooted in the balance between beauty and function, restraint and expression,” Lindsay told Schoolhouse. “Every space should tell a story.”

Lindsay also hosts her own podcast, Interior Design Diaries, where her clients share their side of the design process—a perspective she says listeners rarely get to hear.

Meet Rick Campos

Rick ran his own residential design business for six years, then spent six more years helping grow another design firm before turning his focus to supporting the interior design community.

Today he hosts Design Biz Survival Guide, one of the longest-running podcasts for interior designers, with more than 225 episodes. Through the platform he also offers one-on-one business coaching for designers, the annual Design Biz Retreat, and one-day Power Courses held around the country.

Rick is a past president of ASID Orange County, has served on the board of NKBA SoCal, and is currently President of IDS Orange County – Los Angeles.

Congratulations, Lindsay and Rick! We’re proud to call you both IDI graduates.
