Fall Home Decor Trends For Those Who Are Obsessed With Neutrals

Karen Tietjen2 min read

Introduction

When it comes to decorating with neutral colors, there are two sides: Those who are obsessed with them, and those who consider them a snooze. If you resonate with the former, you'll be glad to know that some of this year's fall decor trends follow a muted palette; and if you're a fan of punchy colors, these subtle surroundings make a perfect backdrop for a bold pop.

Love 'em or hate 'em, neutrals are timeless, versatile, and allow for you to change the vibe of your home from season to season. Whether you're a minimalist, a maximalist, or you can't wait to deck the halls for the holidays, these go-with-anything colors mean your style can transition for months and years to come.

This Fall's Neutral Color Trends

Designers highlight several key neutral palettes dominating autumn 2019 interiors, each offering distinct aesthetic possibilities for home decorating.

Matte Black: "Matte black has been the most popular of all trends in recent months" according to Lauren O'Donnell, in-house interior designer for Build.com. Small accents like vases, lamps, frames, and fixtures provide impactful updates without permanent commitment.

Natural Woods: Incorporating natural materials brings warmth and texture. O'Donnell suggests "rustic beams over fireplaces, floating shelving from white oak, or full kitchens with warm wood finishes." Temporary options include wooden bowls filled with seasonal gourds or stacked cutting boards.

Taupes and Greiges: Cooler gray tones are giving way to warmer, earthier hues. O'Donnell notes these "natural feel" tones work beautifully on kitchen cabinets, upholstery, and walls across multiple design styles, making them perfect for autumn aesthetics.

Unconventional Neutrals: Beyond traditional beiges and tans, consider unexpected options. Mélanie Berliet, general manager of The Spruce, suggests "lightish grays, blues, and yellows can work as neutrals, too," highlighting examples like Lilac Sand and Sundream.
