Introduction
The iconic Barcelona chair was designed in 1929 for the Spanish Royal Family by German designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The form draws inspiration from Roman folding chairs known as the Curule chair.
Despite Bauhaus-era architects and designers focusing on quality furnishings for ordinary people, the Barcelona chair proved exceptional. In 1950, Mies redesigned it using modern techniques that allowed the frame to be molded from a single stainless steel piece rather than bolted together. The original pigskin upholstery was replaced with cow leather.
Knoll adopted the design and continues manufacturing it today. Though mass-produced, each chair features upholstery consisting of 40 individual panels from a single hide, giving it handcrafted qualities that justify its premium pricing.
Since 1953, Knoll Inc has produced Barcelona chairs in two steel configurations: chrome and stainless. This furniture piece stands as one of the most recognizable objects of the past century and a modernist design icon, frequently appearing in homes and publications. While available in numerous colors, black leather remains the most sought-after option.
