1,000-year-old Italian Castle Repurposed into a Hotel

IDI Editorial Team2 min read

Introduction

Hotel Castello di Reschio opened in spring 2021, situated at the northernmost tip of the 3,700-acre Reschio estate owned by Count Benedikt Bolza and his family.

Historical Background

The castle dates back to the 10th century. Count Benedikt, trained as a qualified architect in London, meticulously restored and transformed the castle with his family over a decade-long renovation.

Interior Design and Custom Furnishings

Custom furniture was created for suites, restaurants, and spa areas honoring the castle's history. Many original features, including a stone fireplace in the mud room, were preserved.

Unique Room Features

The castle's original oil press was incorporated into Room 10, known as Frantoio. All bedrooms feature different shapes and sizes with common elements like bare plaster walls and wooden beams.

Modern Comfort Meets Historic Charm

Designers created interiors respecting the ancient building while offering modern amenities. Countertops were fabricated from grey Bardiglio marble from Carrara.

Antiques and Local Sourcing

Furniture, art, and antiques were sourced throughout Italy, largely from the biannual Mercanteinfiera antiques fair in Parma.

Common Spaces

The former 'old kitchen' became a sitting room furnished with custom-designed lamps, sofas, chairs, and coffee tables. The Palm Court, a new addition emulating Victorian conservatories, features a steel-framed glasshouse.

Room Amenities and Finishes

Rooms feature terracotta-brick or wooden floors, hand-stitched linen curtains, Italian fabrics, and locally crafted marble and brass vanities. Each bedroom includes custom-designed dressing tables and campaign beds.

Design Philosophy

"Benedikt has embraced an organic approach to design, championing local craftsmanship and creating thoughtful, whimsical spaces filled with comfort and wit."

Spa Facilities

The spa occupies the vaulted stone cellar with hammams, saunas, and plunge pools lit by sunlight filtering through narrow slits and windows.

Conclusion

The castle's conversion to a hotel exemplifies exceptional historical restoration, offering guests an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the original structure while enjoying contemporary hospitality.
